BLENDER GEOMETRY NODES: WHAT IS A FIELD?

JANUARY 2024

I created these slides and shared them on Reddit, the first of a planned series of deep dives on unintuitive technical concepts in geometry nodes. The reception to my post was very positive and I had plans for additional sets just like this (such as explaining the purpose of the Map Range node), but they fell by the wayside after the distraction of moving and starting a new job.

In late 2025, Blender 5.0 changed the convention for node sockets, adding some additional nuance to this discussion. The circle was replaced with the vertical bar for single values, the diamond with dot is no longer used (with the circle now representing a socket that could be either a field or a single value depending on context), and the diamond continues to indicate a field. Just as before, it's still possible to use a single value to drive a field, and still impossible to do the reverse, but now an actionable error message is shown instead of just a red line.
